“Above & Beyond” is a new jazz-flavored pop instrumental Knutson completed after rediscovering a 24-year-old song idea in a pile of unfinished music projects. Inspired initially by her desire to soothe her father during his illness, the tune developed into an uplifting tribute. “I will always think of my dad when I play this - how he went above and beyond for our family and community,” offered Knutson.

Published first as sheet music, “Above & Beyond” has yet to be recorded in the studio for national release.

A peaceful two chord vamp sets a meditative tone and lays a bed for the inviting main theme as it emerges overhead. A feeling of longing and hope develops in the subsequent phrase. Typical to pop form, these two phrases repeat with a little more energy, then lead into a contrasting gospel-tinged bridge with instructions to “Dig deep!” The return of the opening theme has an easy-going feel and the final repeat of the theme, lifted by modulation, brings the piece to a joyful and satisfying end. “The tune evokes a range of feelings - peace, love, longing, sadness, hope, despair, relief, joy, pride, and gratitude. Wow, that’s a lot! But it’s very personal,” shared Knutson.
